Who am I?

I like to describe myself as being multi-faceted and unconventional rather than as someone who finds it impossible to be single-mindedly dedicated to one pursuit or interest. My interests are diverse. That’s it. Diverse is a good word. Let’s go with that.
I write. Besides my published novel, Dancing Between the Beats, I write short stories and flash fiction, poetry, and the occasional personal essay. I share life as I experience it via my blog, which I hope you’ll visit. I’d love feedback.
I am passionate about photography, capturing the world around me with both my cell phone camera and my Canon camera. My home is filled with art. I’m hopeful that I can improve my own artistic skills via ongoing drawing and watercolor painting classes. Gardening is another artistic pursuit. In my garden I can combine colors and textures with abandon.
I dance, and have participated in many ballroom dancing events over the past thirteen years.
What I am not is mechanical. I lack even the most basic of mechanical skills. My husband will happily verify this fact.
But, back to focusing on my writing. I was a technical editor with a geotechnical engineering firm for many years. My journey from technical editor to published author was a long and winding path, which I stepped onto with both happy anticipation and much trepidation.
I was into my mid-fifties before publicly sharing my creative writing. I began by posting/blogging on LiveJournal and writing short newsletter articles for online groups. I was having fun and getting some great feedback.
In 2007, at the urging of a writing friend, I took the leap into the NaNoWriMo fray (National Novel Writing Month). At the end of the allotted thirty days, I’d hammered out a draft novel of over 54K words (50K is the goal. In 2008 I participated again, finishing another draft novel of over 57K words. I then began both critiquing and submitting work on FanStory. Over the years I’ve taken a series of online and in-person writing classes, including an advanced class where I was part of the editorial team for Pima Community College’s, award-winning, arts and literature magazine, SandScript.
I did participate in NaNoWriMo again, in 2011. That draft novel, after several years of revision and editing, was eventually published as Dancing Between the Beats.
